What is Belén Market?
Belén Market is the largest and most important commercial center in the Peruvian Amazon. Located in the Belén neighborhood on the banks of the Itaya River, this market is where the city of Iquitos stocks up on everything: fruits, fish, bush meat, medicinal herbs, handicrafts and products you won't find anywhere else in the world.
Hours and best time to visit
The market opens every day from 5:00 AM to approximately 3:00 PM. The best time to visit is early, between 7:00 and 9:00 AM, when activity is at its peak and products are freshest. Sundays are the busiest day.
Fruits you'll only find here
The fruit section is spectacular. Try aguaje (Iquitos' most popular fruit), camu camu (with more vitamin C than any other fruit in the world), cocona, ungurahui, macambo and Amazonian dragon fruit. Fresh-squeezed juices cost between S/ 2 and S/ 5 and are a must-try experience.
Medicinal herbs and the "witch doctor passage"
One of the most fascinating areas of the market is the so-called "witch doctor passage" or natural medicine section. Here you'll find preparations made from jungle bark, roots and leaves used by Amazonian communities for centuries. Cat's claw, dragon's blood, chuchuhuasi and ayahuasca are sold alongside explanations of their traditional uses.
Belén Floating District
Right next to the market is the famous Floating District, where houses are built on wooden rafts that rise and fall with river levels. During rainy season (December to May), streets become navigable canals. It's one of the most iconic images of Iquitos.
Practical tips
Carry only the cash you need in a front pocket. Don't wear jewelry or display expensive equipment. The market is safe but crowded. Wear closed, comfortable shoes — the floor can be wet. If you want photos, ask vendors for permission. Most agree happily, especially if you buy something.
How to get there from Bora Hotel?
Belén Market is just a 10-minute walk from Bora Hotel Iquitos. Walk down Raimondi street to Próspero street, turn left and go straight. You can also take a mototaxi (S/ 3). At the hotel reception, we'll give you detailed directions and a map.
