What is August like in Iquitos?

August falls right in the middle of the low-water season in the Peruvian Amazon, and that defines the whole trip. The river drops, sandy river beaches emerge, jungle trails dry out and open up, and wildlife concentrates around the remaining waterways. It is the "walkable" side of the jungle: less canoeing among flooded trees, more trekking, fishing, and river beaches.

The weather remains Amazonian (hot and humid year-round, with the possibility of rain at any time), but August usually brings clearer days than the high-water months. Wear light clothing, repellent, a hat, and a raincoat just in case: the jungle doesn't give warnings.

Iquitos in August, low-water season in the Amazon

Why August is high season

It is no coincidence that August is one of the months with the highest number of travelers arriving in Iquitos. It coincides with summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere and the best dry jungle weather, bringing together international and domestic travelers. In our own experience, it is the busiest month of the year, with the highest movement of guests, and among European visitors, Spaniards have one of their yearly peaks here.

The practical implication? It is a spectacular month to come, but also the one with the highest demand. Booking late costs you in price and availability.

What to do in Iquitos in August

The low-water season favors certain types of activities:

Jungle hikes with dry, passable trails. River beaches that only exist during these months. Fishing (including piraña fishing), which improves as the river drops. And the year-round classics: river tours with pink dolphins, riverside communities, the butterfly farm, and the manatee rescue center. To choose based on your pace, see the best tours in Iquitos.

Your pivot night before the lodge or cruise

Most of those coming in August do not stay just in the city: they have a jungle lodge or an Amazon cruise booked. And here the usual pattern emerges: those plans start early in the morning from Iquitos, so it's advisable to arrive a day early to absorb any flight delays and start refreshed.

That night in the city is not wasted time: the boardwalk at sunset and a first Amazonian dinner are the best prelude to the jungle. How to make the most of it is covered in how to get to Iquitos from Spain, designed for travelers crossing the Atlantic specifically for this season.

Book in advance

It is the only advice we would repeat in capital letters: in August, book your flight and hotel weeks in advance. It is the month of highest demand, Lima-Iquitos flights increase in price, and the best accommodation options sell out first. Deciding early is the difference between the trip you wanted and the one that was left available.

At Bora Hotel, every August we welcome national and international travelers heading to the jungle, with logistics designed for the season: free 24-hour airport transfers, a central location minutes from the Plaza de Armas and the boardwalk, breakfast included from early on, free luggage storage while you are at the lodge or cruise, and a 24-hour reception. Message us on WhatsApp with your August dates and secure your base before it fills up.
