Why spend Fiestas Patrias in the jungle

The long Fiestas Patrias holiday is one of the few in the year that allows for a real trip without taking vacation days. And while half of Peru aims for the same beaches and the same valleys as always, there is an alternative that feels like leaving the country without actually doing so: the Amazon. In three days, Iquitos trades your holiday for pink dolphins, sunsets on the boardwalk, and a cuisine unlike anything on the coast or in the highlands.

For Peruvian travelers, the logistics work in their favor: a short flight from Lima and you are in another world. The only requirement is to decide early, and we'll talk about that at the end, because it matters.

Boat ride on the Amazon River near Iquitos during Fiestas Patrias

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and historic center. Fly early from Lima (1h45) and make the most of the afternoon. Check-in, and walk the center: the Plaza de Armas, the Iron House designed by Eiffel's studio, and the Tarapacá boardwalk at sunset over the river. End with an Amazonian dinner: your first juane or tacacho with cecina sets the tone for the trip.

Day 2: The river and the jungle. The big day. A river tour takes you to riverside towns, communities, pink dolphins, and, depending on the tour, an animal rescue center or a jungle hike. It's the day that justifies the trip. You have options for all paces in our guide to the best tours in Iquitos.

Day 3: Market and return. Start early at the Belén market, the most intense in the Amazon, to take home impossible fruits and one last hit of urban jungle (all the details in the Belén market guide). Lunch, and then off to the airport with a tired body and a full mind.

How to get there and when to book

Iquitos can only be reached by flying (there are no roads), and there lies the only catch to the plan: during Fiestas Patrias, Lima–Iquitos flights increase in price and fill up, because half the country travels on this holiday. The rule is simple: buy your flight several weeks in advance and be flexible with your departure day. The details on airlines and schedules are in how to get to Iquitos from Lima.

What to eat during an Amazonian Fiestas Patrias

If you come in July, the food is part of the celebration. The juane (rice with hen wrapped in a bijao leaf) is almost a symbol of the San Juan season, just before the holiday. Add tacacho with cecina, fish patarashca, and an aguaje or cocona juice. Find out where to try each dish in our Amazonian gastronomy guide.

Iquitos as a family

The plan works very well with children: river tours with dolphins, the butterfly farm, the manatee rescue center, and the boardwalk are boredom-proof. The heat requires hydration, a hat, and a slow pace at midday, but the jungle captivates at any age. And if you plan to travel year-round, it's worth knowing the best time to visit Iquitos based on what you want to see.

Book early: the holiday fills up

We say this bluntly because it's what costs last-minute travelers the most: during Fiestas Patrias, flights and hotels in Iquitos fill up. The sooner you lock in your flight and accommodation, the better the price and location. A complete city guide to finish planning is in the Iquitos guide.

At Bora Hotel, we make the logistical part easy: free 24-hour airport transfer (just send us your flight details a day in advance), a central location minutes from the Plaza de Armas and the boardwalk, breakfast included, and a 24-hour reception. Message us on WhatsApp with your holiday dates and we'll secure your getaway base before it's full.
